Comparing FPD-Link IV, GMSL3, and ASA Motion Link for Zonal Video Backhaul

By Dr. Marcus O'Reilly, Senior High-Speed Interconnect Engineer • August 2026

Abstract: An empirical benchmark of automotive SerDes physical layer protocols, evaluating signal attenuation, eye-diagram margins, and packet error rates.

1. The Multi-Gigabit SerDes Landscape Modern ADAS camera configurations push data rates beyond 12 Gbps per link. This paper benchmarks Texas Instruments FPD-Link IV, Analog Devices GMSL3, and open-standard Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) Motion Link transceivers.

2. Signal Integrity across Temperature and Aging Cables were aged through thermal cycling (-40°C to +125°C) and mechanical bending stress. Results confirmed that forward error correction (FEC) combined with adaptive cable equalization maintained bit error rates below 10^-12 across 15-meter automotive coaxial cables.
