Dynamic Re-Routing and Port Isolation during Local Short-Circuit Faults
By Sergei Voronov, Chief Vehicle Network Architect • July 2026
Abstract:
Autonomous fault isolation in zonal Ethernet switches to prevent local physical short circuits from cascading into whole-vehicle network crashes.
1. Cascading Failures in Network Rings In a zonal Ethernet ring, a physical cable severance caused by a collision must not disrupt communication between surviving controllers.
2. Sub-Microsecond Link Failover By implementing hardware link-monitoring engines coupled with IEEE 802.1CB frame replication, zonal switches detect cable cuts in under 850 nanoseconds, redirecting packet streams along the alternate path of the ring with zero frame drops, fulfilling ISO 26262 ASIL-D availability requirements.
